Mentoring - it's a gift you give yourself!

I just finished reading Patty Azzarello's blog on mentoring and felt inspired to share some thoughts. The premise of the blog is that we often don't think that we can mentor someone because we think we don't have anything to offer or we think we don't have enough time.

Patty challenges both of these misconceptions by saying that no matter what stage we are at in our careers, we can mentor someone! The things we know seem obvious to us but they may be quite valuable to someone with less work or life experience.

As for the time issue, Patty concludes by saying that taking the time to mentor someone ironically makes you feel less overwhelmed in that time. It's a gift you give yourself!

Our Challenge Factory experts have the wonderful opportunity to draw close to someone, to mentor them for a day as they explore career transition. It's what makes the Challenge Factory process so unique and so inspiring. Thank you to all our experts who give so freely of themselves - I suspect they get just as much in return!

With this week being National

With this week being National Volunteer Week in Canada, I think the timing of this blog post is very relevant. It is interesting how having a structured mentoring relationship actually helps with productivity - especially when you have a very full calendar. It is also an interesting trend to see how many people indicating that volunteerism and informal mentoring are how they found their jobs or their next careers.

Mentoring allows you to try new things and use talents that your current job may not require of you. It can be very creative and powerful - and a key part of how you mature your relationships and careers.
