What does better look like?

Sometimes you just need to dive in and try something new and different. I have a few hobbies... Some are really just interests like fine arts and architecture and aviation; some are... well a bit nutty like street Magic and then there is woodworking. That is where I like to spend the majority of my hobby time (as limited as it is with a busy career).

Chatting with the folks here at Challenge Factory resulted in an immersion experience where they arranged for me to spend a day with a professional woodworker. That opened my eyes not only to what it takes to be a small business owner but also what it means to be a modern crafts person.

I learned allot in that day and none of it was on usual tips on how to make furniture, finishing or joinery. What I saw was behind the scenes of the skillful artisan who also needs immense discipline and ingenuity to be successful.

Like any skill that I am glad to learn, I'm using the lessons from this experience to enrich my own vision for what better looks like. These experiences are, metaphorically, like science; more questions appear as you work through the hypothesis.

So I continue to explore. Sometimes I am amazed at how the elements seem to conspire to push me, purposefully, towards a different path.
