Employees Seek Opportunities to be Entrepreneurial

Intrapreneur among corporate employees

The world of work and careers is changing. Only 7% of Gen-Y works for a Fortune 500 company as start-ups and entrepreneurship dominate career aspirations.

But is this desire to start something new or be more in control unqiue to Gen Y? At Challenge Factory, we don't think so. Our clients come from a wide variety of sectors and professions and all express a similar need: to find work that makes them proud, excited and like they are part of something new and useful.

It makes sense that there is an increasing desire to be part of something new. Looking industry by industry so much has changed in the last ten years that there are few workplaces that still look or feel like they used to. Management mantra over the last few years has been "change is the new normal, get used to it."  Maybe this increased interest in entrepreneurship is exactly that: society getting used to change and not seeing entrepreneurship as Corporate Canada's risky alternative.

Among Challenge Factory clients, 60% decide to start their own businesses. Most have held long and successful careers in the corporate sector and now seek something they can call their own. It is interesting that this demographic is mirroring the trend noted among Gen Y. Perhaps it is not a generational thing afterall.

If good employees are looking to leave or to retire into more entrepreneurial careers, why not create new structures and mechanisms to support and benefit from their experience and creativity, inside the company? They will be working somewhere, let's have them working for you.

Our corporate programs use experiential games and workshops to first work with executive teams as they identify how this might lead to greater corporate performance. We create a scorecard and structure that is based on your corporate goals and metrics. We then work with key talent employees to see how the program might entice them to stay and grow a business, from the inside.

New industries, segments, markets and products emerging all the time. Why not consider what a new breed of employee, the intrapreneur, might do to get you out ahead of your competition faster?
